You are my JJ Bean and will always be. This year will be your 5th grade year. A year filled with football, books, basketball, books, baseball and books. I am sure we will add some fun in there. You are a good big brother (most of the time). Having to set a good example for Jax and Coop can be hard and we know that you are doing your best. It makes us proud to hear compliments about how polite you are around your friends parents, keep up the good work. Your brothers watch everything you do, from working hard, to how to throw a baseball, to passing a basketball (notice I wrote passing, not shooting), to your love of reading. I love you JJ! Keep smiling and enjoying life. Have a great 10th birthday!

They played in the championship game at Autzen and got wallopped! Getting to play on the same field that LaMichael James and Darren Thomas play...is pretty cool (the words of a 9 year old). Next sport up-basketball! JJ will get a couple weeks off...and this mom is thankful for that.

Jackson's soccer season ended and quickly moved into basketball. Jackson loved soccer. He is a quick runner and enjoyed passing and scoring. His smile is contagious on the field and court.
He goes where his brothers are practicing. He kicks the soccer ball and plays sharks and minnows, or he dribbles the basketball during warm ups. He has had his basketball clothes laid out for YMCA basketball for 2 weeks and it doesn't begin until mid December. We can assume Cooper will be following in his big brothers footsteps .
JJ is in 4th grade with a great teacher who has given homework then first week....yeah!

He gets to wear glasses this year, when he sits further from the white board, a tad near sighted. Picking out glasses was fun, as soon as he saw the Avatar glasses he was set. He is excited to study Oregon this year. Football has begun and is kicking my butt! And yes I did say my butt. Practices 4 nights a week, 2 hours a night with and optional 15 minute pre practice. Really optional. He has been tired the last 2 nights. Practice over at 8 and home to homework and dinner. Get used to it kiddo!
Jackson started 1st grade and was excited to get the same teacher as last year. He is sitting at a table with girls and loves it. He has his own style, notice the tye dye and camo.

Jackson is going to have a great year. His speech is going to be tested next week and I am hopeful that we will begin to understand more of what he is telling us. Jackson loves to talk and tell us stories, and has been getting frustrated when he aren't able to understand all the amazing things.
Coop is in preschool again at the Y. He loves his teachers and his friends. He gets to to have lessons in the big pool and become a great swimmer like his brothers. Thank goodness for swim lessons at the Y.

Happy first week of school boys! This weekend was filled with Corey’s family. This doesn’t happen very often as his parents live in Florida, brother in Hawaii and sister in California. He recently became reacquainted with his extended family, cousins, aunts and uncles, more cousins. It was fun to see him connect with family. There was a wedding for a cousin and a memorial service for his Grandma. The boys were able to play with their cousin Ashlyn and Uncle Hobie. Good times.
Aside from the fuel used in transport, grazing land is needed for all of these animals. Where does all that land come from in a densely forested region? Cheesy mom thing to do at 6:00 am when the house is still quiet. Yesterday I was listening to a Manic Mommies podcast (on youth football). They mentioned that moms of girls are the happiest, moms of 1 boys and one girl are pretty happy, moms of two boys start to lost a little of the happiness, and moms of more than 2 boys-well they have gone off the deep end. I giggled when I heard that, probably because the last two books I have purchase have been "The Happiness Project" and "The Happiest Mom". Both I have started and neither have I finished. I haven't even made it past Chapter 2. Not because I don't want to be happier. I am trying to make it through "No More Meltdowns" to help with the numerous meltdowns that occur in a house of 3 boys, that would make my happier.
And then I can breath and smile and everyone is happy!Team Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12907370706761916033noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5602685516796502235.post-73538433251332944692011-03-27T06:30:00.000-07:002011-03-27T06:30:43.066-07:00RaiderSaturday morning we lost our beloved Raider. She was our first baby. 13 in dog years and 104 in human years. Raider had the perfect life and was the perfect dog. The last couple years she has been hanging on. We ate a quick dinner and headed off to "meet one of Granny's friends." We drove into Portland, stopped off at motel, we couldn't remember where Granny's friend lived and started in the direction of the Rose Garden. Jackson points out the RG first, we pull into the parking lot, JJ wants to know what we are doing. Well boys, we are going to a Blazer Game. Yahoo! But mom, we don't have our Blazer clothes. Silly boys, daddy packed them for you in the back of the car. JJ lets us know his dream is to watch Lebron James, but he is excited. Off we go! We make our signs inside, shoot some hoops at the blow up thing, and head to our seats. Grandma and Grandpa with us to cheer the Blazers on! Finally Brandon Roy goes in and the boys go NUTS! The game was fun, I got to see my friend Janie (she was a couple rows behind us) and we ate some Dibbs. A great game!
I made the comment that someone had been playing mailbox baseball. The boys wanted to know what that was. We saw another mailbox smashed and the explanation began. Little did I know the man I married played a little mailbox baseball when he was younger, except they used zucchinis that flew like rockets when thrown from a moving car. He shared this with the impressionable youth in the back seat. He quickly added that it was not a good idea and his punishment was harsh, 100 hours of homework and he had to marry me. He is so fast on his feet.
Started off with dinner and drinks with friends at The Bridge. Boys were happy at the Y for Parents Night Out, swimming and watching a movie with the amazing staff.
Saturday we went on a long bike ride, looked at the turtles and geese and watched a couple innings of Marist Baseball. Jackson and JJ love their new bikes. Jackson can finally keep up with the rest of us and not be frustrated...well for the majority of the trip.
JJ and Jackson decided to perform some science experiments, all went well until baking soda and vinegar were overflowing on the kitchen counter and the floor. Yep, the mom voice came out. The boys got to put clean dishes away and put dirty dishes in the dishwasher as their penance for not being careful scientists.
As he has the last several years.
Playing tricks about the house.

peeing green in the toilets

throwing Jax and Coops undies all around their bedroom

emptying JJ's sports cards all over his bedroom floor

hiding gold around the house

throwing Jax's (green) clothes up on the basketball hoop

spreading out Corey's hats on the couch

emptying JJ's baseball bag

and left us Lucky Charms for breakfast.

Jackson was so excited to find all the mischief about the house, running from room to room. We opened up the fridge to find green milk! That silly leprechaun was everywhere!
Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone...and Happy first day of March Madness!Team Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12907370706761916033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5602685516796502235.post-3271173594448728202011-03-15T18:26:00.000-07:002011-03-15T18:26:45.070-07:00UghToday was a day. One of those days that you wish you could wake up on the other side of the bed and do over. The days is almost over, and persevere we will...until bedtime!

The boys were crazy this morning, forgetting what needed to happen to get themselves out the door and on their way to school. It was Cooper's mud walk and I am amazed with myself for remembering to pack the extra change of clothes. Words of love exchanged with the biggest boy about getting up a little earlier to help out, and more kind words exchanged about what is on his calendar this week. Not the best time to have a chat about the weekly calendar, but I got my point across.

Email exchanges with Corey about various topics, my stress level rises...or was it my anxiety. His email lists of upcoming events has nothing on my lengthy list of meetings and trainings. In Hollyworld, April-June are the busiest months. Summer camp, summer camp, summer camp...and more summer camp, all planning:)

JJ arrives to my office in the afternoon (he was a stinker in the morning so he was going to spend the afternoon with me doing homework and reading). He arrives upset. He made a bad choice at school. He tells me a gentle version of the story, in tears. Knowing that I would be disappointed. We talk. I talk to his teacher. He knows his consequences at school and at home. No baseball practice, the first baseball practice.

Tough pants on, we make it through the afternoon. He sits on the couch now, reading his First Shot book out loud. Homework is corrected and almost complete. Dinner is in the oven. Jax and Coop are in the playroom playing grunge band. I don't remember being such a a stinker when I was 8. I wonder who he gets this from...Team Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12907370706761916033noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5602685516796502235.post-14481014439963859032011-02-07T22:49:00.000-08:002011-02-07T22:49:24.826-08:00Great DayIt was a great day in the Anderson household. Morning went off without a hitch. Boys up, ready for school, breakfast, brushing without Mommy the Drill Sargent appearing. We get home and homework, setting the table, dinner, playing, reading books, bedtime...without tears and complaining. Please let my stars be in alignment tomorrow and the next day.
Proud mommy moments from today-

At dinner we talk about what we are proud of from the day, and what things we could have worked better at. Order is oldest to youngest. Me-I could have focused on projects at work a little closer. Jackson says he needs to do a better job at circle in kindergarten with keeping his mouth shut. Love that kid!

Jackson had a great time putting name tags on things around the house...all in the pursuit of learning. Corey comes home from work and wonders why the door, table, dresser are all named. :)

JJ asks before bedtime if he can watch Martin Luther Kings Jr. speech on youtube. How can I say no to that?

Coop had pink eye today...he had fun hanging out with Daddy this morning.

Coops at that age where you either have a penis or you don't. If you have one, it's either bigger or smaller than his. Get the picture?

Never a dull moment in a house of boys!Team Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12907370706761916033noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5602685516796502235.post-84534784688267183012011-02-05T07:13:00.000-08:002011-02-05T07:13:53.397-08:00my soap box...I just read an article about two 8th grade basketball coaches who got into a punching match over one player tripping another player. Seriously? I have been around my fair share of sporting events, most likely more than my fair share. Youth sports have gotten completely out of control. Elementary school kids don't need special uniforms, parents keeping stats on the bench or huge trophy's at the end of the season. They all should be saved for when you get to play Varsity in high school. Coaches should be teaching the basic fundamentals of the sports, with an emphasis on good sportsmanship. Taking knee when a player is injured, shaking the other coaches and the officials hand after the game, and being a graceful loser.

Most are coaches are volunteers. It is not an easy task to find 150 people to volunteer their time to coach a youth basketball team. I am one of those volunteers. My fears have been not playing everyone equally and having a son who is a ball hog. The first I think I did a good job one, the second is a work in progress.

Officials-usually you need 1-2 officials a game. Yes it's a paid gig, and most are probably in high school. They needed a job so they sought out their local Y or Kidsports. They are doing their best. It is difficult to officiate a game when you have an overzealous mom screaming at you to watch out because #4 is pushing her baby. It's a game.

Youth sports are suppose to be fun. Leaning the skills, accomplishing the first play, making a great pass, and having fun with your friends. The majority of coaches do a great job. It's those crazy few who don't have a clue about good sportsmanship and winning is the most important thing, and the 3rd grade team that has special uniforms and a website to show the world their stats.

Today as a mommy, I will be focusing on my ball hogs, yep I have two.

Off my soap box for now:)Team Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12907370706761916033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5602685516796502235.post-1500720189095479572011-01-28T21:46:00.000-08:002011-01-28T21:46:04.145-08:00Basketball...is there more to life?Ahhh Basketball. It deserves to be capitalized. In my life it is the best friend that your husband spends his time with. I have loved basketball since I was little. Playing at Central School, shooting in the driveway, refereeing youth, Bean Courts (playing for slurpees and crazy bread), Riley Hall side court...basketball has always been in my life. But it hasn't been my life.
My boys love basketball. We have had a hoop in our house since JJ was born (thank you Heath and Andrea). Slam dunks, trampoline, off the ceiling, jumping over brothers, you name it and it has taken place in the front room. There are at least 10 basketballs in our house, a couple we aren't allowed to touch, and a couple we can't shoot outside. All different sizes, just in case we want a change. We have a hoop in front of our house, with the key and 3 point line painting in yellow and green. Again, my boys love basketball.
My biggest boy loves basketball too. He has been coaching since I met him. Do you know how long basketball season is? Practice starts in October, games in November and it could run until mid March. April-September is time for recruiting, open gyms, weight lifting, working on specific positions, etc. The answer is, Basketball season is year round for a coaches wife and family.

Basketball is motivation at times

If you mess around in class and your teacher calls your mom to talk, there's a good chance you will be watching your next practice or a game. Thankfully that has only happened twice in JJ's 8 years. :)

Getting your homework and reading finished correctly means you can play dunk hoops in in the living room.

Basketball is a distraction

The hoop is closed at 7:00pm. Boys can focus on getting ready for bed.

I think the hoop calls out the boys every time they walk by it-"Come on boys, just one more shot!"

Basketball is discipline

Ball bucket has been known to spend a night or two in the garage when boys are stinkers.

NBA or Duck Jerseys have been excused from the closets when listening ears aren't working

Basketball is FUN!

It's fun to practice plays at recess.

It's fun to attempt a behind the back pass.

It's fun to play Bump.

It's fun to make crazy shots in HORSE.

It's fun to play with your friends.

I loved playing basketball in High School. Loved rebounding (I'm only 5'8"...I like to compare myself to a certain Round Mound of Rebound). When high school was over, I was thankful to play for fun. It' wasn't about winning, unless you are a guy who doesn't think a girl can beat you:).

I want my boys to work hard on the court, the field, the classroom, and the diamond. To respect their coaches, referees and officials and teachers To respect the game and their studies. Basketball has spoiled them. They get to go to their daddy's basketball games, raid the snack bar, sit on the bench, get water and towel for the players, shoot for popcorn at half time, play under the bleachers, and stay up late. What little boy wouldn't love that?

Basketball isn't Life. He passed away in his sleep on January 6th at 89 years old. This past weekend I spent with my Grandma, my Mom, my aunts, uncles and cousins, going through pictures, and remembering Grandpa. I knew that this day would come, that my Grandpa would move on to greener pastures. He was a cowboy...he liked greener pastures. I started writing my memories about Grandpa the night that he passed away. My Grandma asked my to say something at the service, thank goodness I was prepared. I hope that I can make it through and share my love for my Grandpa with our family and friends.
Here is my story...
As the youngest granddaughter…I was his favorite. Actually we were all his favorites. Even if it took a couple tries for Grandpa to get our names right, he would get it. After all there are too many of us to remember. I've been looking through a lot of pictures of Grandpa and he is smiling in every single one. Surrounded by his children, his grand children and his great grandchildren. Surrounded by love.
When we were all little we used to go camping at Beverly Beach during the summer. If there was a garage sale between Newberg and Newport, we would stop to find the next big bargain.

Riding in the top of the truck camper while Grandpa was driving…a little crazy.
Listening to “Counting Flowers on the Wall” on the 8 track in the camper while playing cards. Every time I hear that song I think of arguing with my cousin Maggie over whose rules of rummy are correct.

Every once in a while a filbert would go flying through the air, perhaps hitting a sibling. Grandpa would yell at us to get back to work. My job for bucking hay was rolling the bales in rows and spreading salt on the bales when they were being put in the barn. Grandma was the driver of the big red truck. “Hit it Marge,” Grandpa would yell when it was time for the truck to move. The truck would usually die and Grandpa would yell again, sometimes going to help Grandma get it started.
The day the sippy cups disappear and my little guy becomes a Big Boy.
Jackson and his friend Luke are comfy in their sleeping bags watching a movie in the playroom and JJ is at Camp Gma and will be home this afternoon.

Cooper is our bonus baby. I sent Corey back to the store at least 5 times to buy more tests because they kept being positive.

His birth story is a quick one. We went to our morning appointment and Dr. Betterton had us check into the hospital. With all 3 boys I was induced due to high blood pressure. They get me all hooked up to the bells and whistles, and pitocin drip. We wait a bit, I get checked, nothing, pitocin seems to be taking it's own sweet time. Couple hours go by, I am not sure the exact order but somewhere in there my parents arrive, Corey goes home to get the boys settled, nurse tells us it won't be until later in the night and then another nurse checks me. Woosh, she accidentally breaks my water. The contractions begin and they are STRONG! There is no stopping now. We get on the long list of people wanting epidurals, contractions are getting stronger and much closer. Epidural guys arrives, I "talk" to Corey on the phone and strongly encourage him to speed back to the hospital or he may miss the birth. About 3:00 pm Corey and Dr. Betterton walk into the room and 11 minutes later out pops Cooper. The epidural served no purpose. Famous last words again from our doctor...."It really does get easier each time for you guys."
